Day description

Day Day 1

Arrival in Iceland – Hveragerði (90–100 km)

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Your rental car will be waiting for you at Keflavík Airport when you arrive. A great way to start your Iceland holiday is with a visit to the world-famous Blue Lagoon – one of Iceland’s most iconic geothermal spas. Please note that admission is not included in the package and must be booked separately in advance.

The Blue Lagoon is a crystal-blue oasis set in the middle of a lava field on the way from the airport to Reykjavík. The warm, mineral-rich waters (36–39°C) are sourced from deep underground and are renowned for their soothing and rejuvenating qualities. The site also features an indoor lagoon, a geothermal sauna, and a restaurant offering both light meals and à la carte dining.

Re-energised after your visit, drive past the capital and over the Hellisheiði heath to the charming geothermal town of Hveragerði for your first overnight stay.

Highlights:

  • Blue Lagoon (optional add-on)
  • Reykjavík
  • Hveragerði (geothermal town)
Day Day 2

Hveragerði – Kirkjubæjarklaustur (220 km)

seljalandsfoss, waterfall iceland

After breakfast at your hotel, you travel south following Road No. 1 (Riksveg 1). You will pass through the towns Hveragerdi, Selfoss and Hella. East of Hvolsvöllur you will reach the two waterfalls Seljandsfoss and Skógafoss, two stops not to be missed. At Skógar you will also find a museum giving interesting insights into how Icelandic people lived in the past as well as in current times. You can also explore the glacial tongue Solheimajökull and the bird cliffs of Dyrhólaey, where many migrating sea birds nest, among them the famous puffins during spring and summer.

The black lava beaches on the South Coast are renowned, and you can take a walk along the Reynishverfi beach or on the little beach in the village Vik. Be careful when walking too close to the waves, their powerful pull can easily drag a person out to sea!

After Vik you pass through the black sand desert Mýrdalssandur and later the enormous lava field Eldhraun, which was formed during the big volcanic outbreak in 1783. You later arrive at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, a small town in beautiful surroundings. You can stop here to take a look at the so-called ”church floor”, formed by strange basalt cliff formations reminiscent of a lime floor and situated just east of town. Overnight stay in or nearby Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Highlights:

  • Lava Centre (optional add-on)
  • Seljalandsfoss
  • Skógafoss
  • Skógar museum
  • Sólheimajökull (glacier)
  • Dyrhólaey
  • Reynisfjara (black beach)
  • Vík
  • Eldhraun (lava field)
  • Fjaðrárgljúfur (canyon)
Day Day 3

Vatnajökull – Jökulsárlón – Vík (330 km)

lava beach, south coast, reynisfjara, iceland

Start your third day by driving east to the area at the foot of the Vatnajökull glacier. On the way, you can see Dverghamrar, a belt of basalt columns just a few kilometres east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Continue east from here over Skeiðarársandur, a vast plain with wonderful views over Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull.

Past this wide stretch of desert is Skaftafell National Park, a beautiful area resting at the foot of the glacier known for its unique flora and lush green vegetation—an oasis between the black desert and the ice. There are a number of walking paths you can take from here, for example, through the park to the beautiful Svartifoss waterfall. Further east, you reach the magical glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón, where enormous icebergs float in the still blue water. We also recommend a stop at the nearby Diamond Beach. Afterwards, drive back west along the south coast for your overnight stay in the Vík area.

Highlights:

  • Dverghamrar (basalt columns)
  • Skaftafell National Park
  • Vatnajökull (glacier)
  • Jökulsárlón (glacier lagoon)
  • Diamond Beach
Day Day 4

Vík – The Golden Circle – Reykjavík (280 km)

gullfoss, iceland

Today you will visit some of the most famous and interesting attractions Iceland has to offer. Follow Road No. 1 west through Hvolsvöllur and Hella until you pass the river Þjórsá, then head north in the direction of Flúðir. If you have the time, we highly recommend a visit to the volcanic crater Kerið as well as the historically important site of Skálholt.

From there, continue to the world-famous geothermal area of Geysir, where Strokkur, the most active of the geysers, erupts every few minutes. Close by is the majestic Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall,” often described as Iceland’s most beautiful. Your next stop is Þingvellir National Park, an area of immense historical importance and fascinating geology, as it marks the meeting point of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Finally, drive to Reykjavík for your overnight stay.

Highlights:

  • Gullfoss (waterfall)
  • Geysir (Strokkur)
  • Þingvellir National Park
  • Secret Lagoon (optional add-on)
  • Friðheimar Farm (greenhouse visit)
  • Laugarvatn
  • Skálholt (historical site)
Day Day 5

Return home or extra day in Reykjavík (50 km)

reykjavik, summer, iceland

Breakfast at the hotel. Return either early in the morning or in the afternoon. You drive from Reykjavík to Keflavík Airport (approximately 45 minutes) and leave the car at the airport when departing.

If you have chosen to extend your trip by an extra night then you will have some extra time to explore the most northerly capital city in the world. Stroll around town and discover an array of restaurants, cafés and cosy shopping streets. Culture vultures will find that the city offers a wide range of museums to explore. The evening can be spent tucked away in a cosy pub or throwing some moves on a rocking dance floor. Reykjavík is known for its buzzing night life.

Day Day 6

Return home (5n) (50 km)

Return flights either early in the morning or in the afternoon. Drive from Reykjavík to Keflavík airport (approx. 45 mins) and leave the car there in connection with your return flight.
