Day description
Welcome to Iceland! Upon arrival at Keflavík Airport, collect your rental car and drive towards South Iceland. On the way, you can stop at the Blue Lagoon for a swim in the mineral-rich, warm water and admire the surrounding lava landscape. Continue to the Hvolsvöllur area, where you will stay for the next three nights. The area is characterised by beautiful nature and stories from the Icelandic sagas.
Overnight in the Hvolsvöllur area.
Today's journey along the south coast takes you to several of Iceland's most iconic places. At Seljalandsfoss, you can walk behind the waterfall and experience its power up close. Nearby, you will find Gljúfrabúi, a hidden gem. At Skógafoss, you can take the stairs up to a viewpoint with views over the surrounding landscape. For those interested in history, Skógar Museum is well worth a visit.
The trip continues to Reynisfjara, the black sand beach with its basalt columns and tales of turned-to-stone trolls. After Vík, you will pass Mýrdalssandur and the lava field Eldhraun. Feel free to stop at Fjadrárgljúfur, a beautiful canyon with paths offering great photo opportunities.
Wrap up the evening at Dyrhólaey, where during summer (May-August) you can see puffins up close. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best chances to spot them. You will then return to your accommodation in the Hvolsvöllur area.
Overnight in the Hvolsvöllur area.
This day is completely tailored to your preferences. You can go horseback riding at Hestheimar, play golf near Fludir or Hella, or opt for an exciting activity such as an ATV tour to the plane wreck on the beach or a snowmobiling tour. All activities are led by experienced guides.
Another option is a day trip to the Westman Islands. The ferry to Heimaey takes you to a striking landscape shaped by the volcanic eruption of 1973. During the summer, you might also spot puffins here. Alternatively, you can join a bus tour to Þórsmörk, a nature reserve surrounded by steep mountain ridges, glacial rivers, and lush valleys with hiking trails.
Some activities, such as the ferry to the Westman Islands and tours to Þórsmörk, are seasonal and should be booked in advance. Feel free to contact us for further details when planning your trip.
Overnight in the Hvolsvöllur area.
On your way to Reykjavík, you will visit some of Iceland's most famous attractions. The first stop is Skálholt, Iceland's religious centre during the Middle Ages and home to the country's bishops for over 700 years. Nearby, you will find the Viking farm Stöng and the lush ravine Gjáin.
At Friðheimar, you can see how tomatoes are grown in greenhouses using innovative cultivation techniques. Be sure to taste their famous tomato soup or other local specialties in the charming restaurant. You may also take a short detour to the Secret Lagoon, Iceland's oldest geothermal pool, for a relaxing soak.
Then continue to the Geysir area to experience the geothermal landscape. Strokkur, which regularly shoots water columns high into the air, is one of the highlights of the area. Just nearby is Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most famous waterfalls. The day's final stop is at Thingvellir National Park, a historically significant site where tectonic plates meet and the world's first parliament was founded.
You will spend the evening in Reykjavík.
Overnight in Reykjavik.
During the last couple of days, you'll have time to explore Reykjavík at your own pace. There’s plenty to do in the city—from visiting museums and design shops to shopping for traditional Icelandic wool products. A great first stop is Hallgrímskirkja, where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the entire city from the tower.
If you're keen to dive deeper into the city's history and culture, there are several guided tours available. You could join a modern "Viking" for a walking tour and hear stories about Iceland's past, or indulge in local flavours on a food tour. For those wanting to experience more of the Icelandic landscape, a day trip to Fagradalsfjall, Iceland's youngest volcano, is an exciting option.
In the evening, you can choose from the many restaurants, pubs, and live music venues around town. If you want to wrap up your day with something special, Sky Lagoon is an excellent choice. This modern geothermal spa features an infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Here, you can experience Icelandic bathing culture with warm and cold baths, a steam room, and a skin treatment.
Overnight in Reykjavík.
(Note: Children under 12 years old are not permitted at Sky Lagoon.)
For those who have chosen a 6-night trip, it’s time to go back home. You’ll drive to Keflavík Airport, drop off your rental car, and check in for your flight home. The journey from Reykjavík to the airport takes about 45 minutes.
If you've opted for an extra night in Reykjavík, there’s still plenty to explore. You might want to visit the Reykjanes Peninsula, known for its geothermal landscapes, hot springs, and lava fields. Alternatively, you can stay in the city and go whale watching right from the harbour. Another popular choice is FlyOver Iceland, a virtual flight experience showcasing some of the country’s most iconic natural wonders.
You’ll find more recommended activities listed further down the page.
Overnight in Reykjavík (if extended).
You’ll be heading home either early in the morning or in the afternoon, depending on your flight schedule. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from Reykjavík to Keflavík Airport, so make sure to plan your journey to allow enough time to return your rental car and check in without any rush.
